Imagine the thrill of a car race in the backdrop of the breathtaking panorama of the Sibillini Mountains. Do you think it’s impossible? Not here. For a weekend Sarnano becomes a coveted destination for lovers of four wheels thanks to the time of climbing Sarnano-Sassotetto. It is a car race uphill during which the cars whizzing, individually, towards the top of the mountain trying to establish the best time.
The trophy is dedicated to the pilot Lodovico Scarfiotti, grandson of Giovanni Agnelli and great champion of motoring, tragically died in an accident in Rossfeld, Germany, in 1968. The first edition of the Trofeo Scarfiotti dates back to 1969, but the event broke off at the 17th edition, then resumed in 2008 thanks to the commitment ofAutomobile Club Macerata, to the support of the Municipality of Sarnano and to the commitment of some local associations. The prestige and spectacularity of Sarnano-Sassotetto have grown year after year and now it is one of the most prestigious automobile competitions at the national level.
From 2013 the time trial Sarnano-Sassotetto consists of two races that took place at the same weekend: the stage of the Italian Mountain Championship and the Italian championship cars.
Every year about 200 pilots and thousands of spectators come to Sarnano for this event, able to convey its spectacularity not only to fans of car racing. In the days preceding the race, in fact, the whole country turns into a great paddock: a kaleidoscope of vehicles ready to give show.
Sarnano is much more than a small town.
